Ice Fall Accident

There was a very bad avalanche accident about two thirds of the way up in the Ice Fall today. Many people are still missing. We are all safe here at our Base Camp. Four of our guys were up high when the avalanche happened, but were able to get safely back to camp. We are hoping for the best, but it looks to be a dire situation. We all heard it happen about 6:30 this morning Nepalese time. There is much activity in Base Camp as all the teams are trying to sort this situation out and rescues are currently underway. A very sobering day.

    Holy Cow. Praying for those still missing and those that were lost. It's on the news locally. Keep the faith. Glad you all are safe.

    I'm so glad I was able to find your blog quickly AND that you were able to post!! The second I turned on the TV this morning to start getting ready for work, this was the first news that we heard! Rae and I were very upset and worried!!! (That's to put it calmly!!) Bottom line: I was able to find your blog AND WE ARE SO SO VERY HAPPY AND RELIEVED TO READ THAT YOU BOTH ARE SAFE!!!!! (You KNOW this is NOT going to go over well with Joan, don't you??! It was just yesterday that she made a comment to me that she was really worried about your and Barbara's safety!!!) Lynette

    Shane and Barbara - Have you heard about this (see link) since you've been there? A guy from Newton, Jonathan Birchfield, is ALSO there with this Discovery Channel team. I don't think Jonathan was at Base Camp just yet; I think he was about a day away. So thankfully he is SAFE as well! Ask Barbara if she knows him; his Dad was a popular teacher at NCHS. I know there are a LOT of people there --- and even more chaos than ever probably now. But keep your eyes / ears open for him (since he's from Newton!) SMALL WORLD! Please STAY SAFE!!! (FYI - Joan woke Dad/Bill up ~2am --- possibly frantic, I guess, after hearing of the avalanche! Thankfully you had already posted of your status - and thankfully she was able to locate it quickly!)

    Very scary. I'm happy you are safe, and I would be lying if I said I was not now more concerned for your safety than I already was. But I trust your judgment, and on every level you certainly are in a better situation to assess the situation than I am.

    Shane - want to say that it has been so awesome to get the blogs from you through the progress
    of your's & Barbara's trip, to see a picture of the team,the area, etc.
